US Army Corps of Engineers · Kansas
The lake was named for the nearby town of Council Grove, the birthplace of the Santa Fe Trail and a National Historic District. The lake is in the heart of the Flint Hills, one of the last vestiges of Tallgrass Prairie, and is located 20 miles north of the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and 30 miles south of the Konza Prairie Preserve.
Reservations for Council Grove Lake are made through Recreation.gov. In peak season, the most popular campgrounds are typically claimed within minutes of each release — which is why the park reads as "sold out" for most of the year.
Sold out is not final, though. People book far ahead and plans change, so cancellations return to the official calendar throughout the season — with no announcement, at any hour. A cancelled site is bookable by whoever sees it first.
