Rio Grande del Norte National Monument campsites, sold out? Here's how spots come back.

Shaped by millennia of geologic forces and human passage and presence, the Río Grande del Norte National Monument protects a stark and sweeping high-desert landscape where the Río Grande plunges through an 800‑foot gorge at the edge of the Taos Plateau. From the sagebrush plains at roughly 7,000 feet, extinct volcanic cones—Cerro de la Olla, Cerro San Antonio, and Cerro del Yuta—rise above canyons, wild rivers, and native grasslands that harbor vital wildlife habitat and unique scientific resources.

How booking at Rio Grande del Norte National Monument works

Reservations for Rio Grande del Norte National Monument are made through Recreation.gov. In peak season, the most popular campgrounds are typically claimed within minutes of each release — which is why the park reads as "sold out" for most of the year.

Sold out is not final, though. People book far ahead and plans change, so cancellations return to the official calendar throughout the season — with no announcement, at any hour. A cancelled site is bookable by whoever sees it first.
