John Day Dam is 216 miles upstream from the mouth of the Columbia River and located at Exit 109 off Interstate 84 in Oregon. The project consists of a navigation lock, spillway, smolt monitoring facility, powerhouse and fish-passage facilities on both shores. Many recreation opportunities are available along the shores of Lake Umatilla and on the John Day River, such as boating, fishing, swimming and sail boarding.
Reservations for John Day Lock and Dam, Lake Umatilla are made through Recreation.gov. In peak season, the most popular campgrounds are typically claimed within minutes of each release — which is why the park reads as "sold out" for most of the year.
Sold out is not final, though. People book far ahead and plans change, so cancellations return to the official calendar throughout the season — with no announcement, at any hour. A cancelled site is bookable by whoever sees it first.
