Westwater Canyon River Permits — a bookable permit listing on Recreation.gov, at Westwater Canyon River. The agency's own description and rules below; permit systems run on lotteries and windows, not cancellation markets.
Westwater Canyon is the first whitewater stretch on the Colorado River in Utah. The canyon is 17 miles long and includes Class IV rapids, is challenging at all water levels, and is only recommended for experienced boaters. As with any remote river section, Westwater can be a very humbling and dangerous place if not treated with proper respect and ability.

Wilderness and backcountry permits do not work like campsites, and this page will not pretend otherwise. Some of these listings are lotteries with fixed application windows and published odds; others release first-come on a schedule; many do both in sequence. The official description above — quoted from the managing agency — states which one this is, and it outranks any general guide, including ours. Three rules that hold across the family:
The park guide ties this permit to the area's campgrounds and frontcountry options.
The listing's own description, quoted on this page, states the allocation method — many famous permits run a lottery phase followed by a first-come remainder. Trust the listing text over any summary.
Lottery-allocated permits do not recycle into a public first-come calendar. If this listing runs a day-before or remainder draw, the description says so — that draw is the legitimate second chance.
No. Permits are issued to named applicants through the official system; we publish the data, the calendars, and the odds — and watch the bookable campgrounds around them.
