Thanksgiving Weekend Campsite Openings, Counted

Thanksgiving is the one fall holiday Americans camp in force — a four-day weekend, mild desert and Gulf weather, and campgrounds that booked out months ago. So we cut our scanner log to the holiday: every confirmed opening for a stay starting November 25–29, 2026. The log holds 377 of them, across 66 campgrounds — 4.9% of all November-stay openings — and they behave differently from the month around them: they survive a median 5h 45m once they appear, against 5h 00m for the rest of November's completed cycles. The holiday is not yet fully booked out of existence. It is recycling, measurably, and this post counts it.

Quick answers

How many Thanksgiving weekend campsite openings are there?
377 confirmed openings for stays starting November 25–29, 2026, across 66 campgrounds. The core holiday — stays starting Thanksgiving Day through Saturday — accounts for 205 of them. The deepest holiday flows: Furnace Creek Campground (33); Kipahulu Campground (22); Pinnacles Campground (22); Fort Pickens Campground (19); Upper Pines Campground (19).
What do Thanksgiving openings look like?
Mostly short: 174 single nights, 121 two-night stays, and 75 stays of three or four nights — the full-holiday long stay is a rare shape, exactly as the stay-length post's composition would predict. The median Thanksgiving opening was detected 24 days ahead of the stay.
Do Thanksgiving openings last longer than usual?
In this log, yes: median survival 5h 45m across 174 completed Thanksgiving-stay life cycles, against 5h 00m across 4263 completed cycles for the rest of November. Holiday stays are planned further out and re-planned less impulsively — when one does free up, the buyer pool that can still rearrange a holiday is thinner.
What about Christmas and New Year campsites?
Forming, not formed. Stays starting December 24–27 have produced 69 confirmed openings so far and December 28–31 stays 72, out of 888 December-stay openings in total. Those counts will grow as the holidays approach and the cancellation heartland (2–4 days out) reaches them; this post publishes the counts and no survival claims for windows whose completed cycles are still too few.

Furnace Creek leads the Thanksgiving flow.

Death Valley in late November is the holiday's best bet, and its campground proves it in our log: 33 confirmed Thanksgiving-weekend openings already, of 277 openings in total. Our scanners poll it around the clock and text you when the next holiday opening confirms.

Proof, from our own scanners: 277 confirmed openings at Furnace Creek since Oct 29, 2026 — each one re-verified before logging. See the live cancellation index.

The measurement, in one block

Headline: 377 confirmed openings for Thanksgiving weekend stays (Nov 25–29) across 66 campgrounds; median survival 5h 45m (n=174 completed cycles) against 5h 00m for the rest of November.

As of Nov 06, 05:38 AM ET — measurement window Oct 29, 10:54 PM ET – Nov 06, 05:38 AM ET (Eastern); the Thanksgiving slice is defined by stay start date, November 25–29, 2026.

Method: confirmed openings from the production alert log (each re-fetched and verified before logging), filtered to stay start dates in the holiday window; survival from the closure log's completed life cycles for the same stay dates; Cape Point Campground's rolling release excluded throughout.

Start with the geography, because it is the strategy. The five deepest Thanksgiving flows in the log are Furnace Creek Campground (33); Kipahulu Campground (22); Pinnacles Campground (22); Fort Pickens Campground (19); Upper Pines Campground (19). Read that list as a climate map: Death Valley (Furnace Creek, the single deepest holiday flow at 33 openings), coastal Maui (Kipahulu), the California desert ranges (Pinnacles), Yosemite Valley (Upper Pines), and the Florida Gulf (Fort Pickens). Thanksgiving camping in America is a warm-edge phenomenon — the parks where late November is a feature, not a frost risk — and the cancellation supply follows the demand exactly. A hunter still holding no Thanksgiving site should work that list in order rather than refreshing a northern campground whose holiday flow the log barely records.

The shape of the holiday supply

The night-count composition — 174 single nights, 121 two-night stays, 75 of three or four nights — mirrors the system-wide stay-length table in most openings are one night, with one holiday twist: the two-night share is fat. A Thanksgiving trip is most often a two-night shape (arrive Wednesday or Thursday, leave Saturday or Sunday), so two-night cancellations are what the holiday produces — and a hunter who needs the full four nights is, as ever, assembling fragments: a two-night block plus single nights at either end, stitched as they appear. The detection lead tells the same planning story: the median Thanksgiving opening surfaced 24 days ahead of the stay, far beyond the system's 2–4-day heartland, because holiday holders decide early. Which means the holiday's cancellation season is already underway — the openings in this post were detected across the whole window, not in a last-minute burst — and the remaining flow between now and November 25 will arrive on the ordinary heartland schedule as the final holders fold.

Why holiday openings wait a little longer

The survival contrast — 5h 45m for Thanksgiving stays against 5h 00m for the rest of November, on 174 and 4263 completed cycles respectively — is the post's second finding, and it is a buyer-pool story. A random Tuesday opening in mid-November can be claimed by anyone with a flexible week. A Thanksgiving opening can only be claimed by someone whose holiday is still uncommitted in the second week of November: a real pool, but a thinner one, and thinner pools clear slower. The same thinness is the hunter's opportunity. The campers competing for a Thanksgiving alert are not the whole watching world — they are the fraction whose plans are still open — and an opening that lives a median 5h 45m is one a prompt human can actually take, not only a machine. Prompt still matters: 5h 45m is a median, not a promise, and the fast tail of the holiday distribution dies in minutes like every other tail on this site. But if any slice of the calendar rewards setting a watch today and answering it quickly, the log says it is this one. Furnace Creek is where we'd set it first: 33 Thanksgiving openings out of 277 total openings in the window, in Death Valley's best month, at the campground that also leads the desert-season table.

The December windows, sized honestly

Christmas and New Year are the obvious sequel, and the log's answer today is: not yet. December stays overall have produced 888 confirmed openings; the Christmas window (stays starting December 24–27) holds 69 and the New Year window (December 28–31) holds 72. Those are real openings at real campgrounds — a Christmas night at a watched campground is bookable the moment one confirms — but with completed life cycles still in the single digits per window, any survival or composition claim would be a handful of openings wearing a statistic's clothes, so this post prints the counts and stops. The windows will fill on the schedule the lead-time table predicts: December holiday flow concentrates as its own 14-day release cohorts and 2–4-day cancellation heartland arrive. A watch set now is early for December in exactly the way that paid off for Thanksgiving — the Thanksgiving flow, remember, was detected at a median lead of 24 days.

The limits, plainly

The window is young: scanners have watched since Oct 29, 10:54 PM ET, so Thanksgiving openings that recycled before the window opened are invisible to this count, and every figure is a floor. The survival comparison rests on 174 completed Thanksgiving cycles — solid enough for a median, too small for per-campground survival claims, so none are made. Stay-date slices also inherit the log's watch-depth bias: famous warm-edge parks are watched more completely than obscure ones, so a campground missing from the holiday list may be un-watched rather than un-recycling. What survives the caveats is the count itself: 377 confirmed, verified, bookable openings for the holiday weekend, at 66 named campgrounds, still appearing — the holiday is sold out on the calendar and recycling in the log, and both things are true at once.

How long do Thanksgiving campsite openings last?

A median of 5h 45m (n=174 completed life cycles), against 5h 00m for the rest of November's stays — holiday openings clear more slowly because fewer hunters can still rearrange a holiday.
